Spiritual vs Physical Heart Health

The last blog post was on The Power of the Human Heart. If you missed it, click here: https://rebeccapierskalla.com/the-power-of-the-human-heart/

This week let’s be curious about the health of our heart.

Both physical and spiritual.

Physical health is important, no doubt. The heart is an amazing organ. Here are some fun facts:

  • 1893, the first heart surgery performed by Daniel Hale Williams, one of the few black cardiologists in the U.S. at the time. Yes, 1893.
  • 1958, the first implantable pacemaker was used on Arne Larsson. He lived longer than the surgeon who performed the surgery. Arne died at age 86-unrelated to his heart.
  • The youngest person to receive heart surgery was only minutes old. She had a heart defect that many infants won’t survive.

Modern medicine and all the health care professionals available to us are a great blessing. In most cases, they provide answers, help to heal, and provide wellness. But sometimes they can’t. And this can be frustrating…sometimes physical healing does not occur…we don’t see or experience it on this side of glory.

Have you thought about your heart health spiritually?

The word heart is mentioned over 800 times in the Bible. This is significant!

God is concerned with the spiritual health of our heart. The heart, as the seat of emotions, holds our feelings, desires, and intellect. Things hidden in the heart often bubble up as thoughts, words, then actions. Sin starts in the heart.

God knows our heart. Only God can change our heart. God can perform a heart transplant. God longs to be our heart doctor.

“And I will give you a new heart-I will give you new and right desires-and put a new spirit within you. I will take out your stony hearts of sin and give you new hearts of love.”  Ezekiel 36:26 The Living Bible

Proverbs 4:4

Deuteronomy 30:6

Psalm 73:26

Psalm 139:23-24
